There are 4 main types of Care Homes for older people:

1) Care home

This is for older people requiring a basic standard of care, without nursing, and is generally known as a Rest Home. These Homes provide accommodation, meals and personal care (such as help with washing and eating).

2) Care home (Elderly, dementia and mental disorder)

These Homes are for older people with mental health problems like dementia or Alzheimer's, who require a basic standard of care. These Homes are generally known as E.M.I. (Elderly Mentally Infirm) Rest Homes.

3) Care Home with Nursing

These Homes are for older people requiring Nursing Care and are generally know as Nursing Homes. These Homes will have registered nurses to care for the residents health needs.

4) Care Home with Nursing (Elderly, dementia and mental disorder)

These Homes are for older people with mental health problems like dementia or Alzheimer's who require Nursing Care. These Homes will have registered nurses to care for the residents and are generally known as E.M.I. Nursing Homes.

A care assessment will help you understand which type of Care Home will offer the level of care that you need.

What is a care assessment?

A care assessment is an essential part of the process of finding the right level of care or the right type of Care Home. Everyone, whether publicly or privately funded, is entitled to a care assessment which will be provided by your local social services. A care assessment is nothing to be worried about, it will just involve talking to a person about your needs and how you wish to live.

How do I find a good home?

The best way to make sure that the Care Home you are looking at is suitable for you is to ask questions. Make sure you get all the information you need, then go and visit the Home so you can meet the staff and other residents and see what the atmosphere is like.

All homes will have a Statement of Purpose which explains the services offered by the home and a Service User Guide which is designed for potential residents.

Additionally all homes are inspected by the C.S.C.I. (Commission for Social Care Inspection) and all inspection reports can be found at www.csci.org.uk. Many homes now have a quality inspection or "star rating" to help you judge the suitability of the home for your needs.

How will I pay for my care?

Care Homes for elderly people provide care for people of a pensionable age whether they are publicly or privately funded. If you wish to receive public funding and get help from your council in paying for your care, your council will need to carry out a financial assessment. A financial assessment will be carried out after your care assessment.

  • If you have less than £12,750 in savings or other assets you will receive the maximum level of financial support.
  • If you have between £12,750 and £21,000 you will receive partial support and will have to pay some of the care costs yourself.
  • If you have over £21,000 you will have to pay all your care costs and will be privately funded. If your savings or assets fall below £21,000 while you are in a Care Home you can request to be reassessed to receive financial support.
